Aiden couldn't possibly understand how Shaant was unable to picture a lifestyle such as the one Aid was so used to living every summer. He was so used to the hot weather, being able to head to the beach every day and stay there without a second thought. He got so used to being able to do what he loved so much that when it was time for him to return to England and head off to Hogwarts, it was as if he had lost his best friend. He was so eager to return to California and catch the waves again and they were only a few months into the school year. He shrugged off Shaant's quiet laughter, he knew how strange it was to be so passionate about something as stupid as surfing, but he couldn't help it. There was just something about the rush, the feeling he got everytime he caught a big one.
Thinking about it, Aiden could almost feel himself being drawn back there, the memories filling his head making it as if he was there. That is, until the Ravenclaw's voice pulled him back to reality. He thought through Shaant's comment, wondering if it was actually possible to have a summer season without going to the beach at least once. It seemed strange to Aid that Shaant didn't go swimming during the summer months. "You've never been surfing?" he asked, almost in astonishment. It was like asking a little kid if he's ever had a cookie. He nodded, almost reverting back to the dream like daze he was in before. There weren't enough words in the English language to describe how much fun Aiden had over his summer.
He listened to Shaant's summery of his summer. "Ouch," he winced, picturing a structured summer where all anyone did was work. "That's worse than school," he thought out loud. Two boys from such different backgrounds, such different lifestyles. It was a wonder they were such good friends. Aiden couldn't imagine a summer where no one was allowed to have fun. He thought he might die if he was forced into such a tight schedule. "How do you survive?" he asked, honestly wanting to know.

Shaant watched as his friend dazed in and out of wonderful memories of the summer. For once Shaant wished he had something to remember besides books, he didn’t even get to remember most of his “foreseeings”. On a rare occasion they’d come back in a dream. He continued to watch Aiden and almost died of laughter as Aiden asked if he had ever been surfing. “Nope. Haven’t even seen a beach with my own eyes, Lakes yes, a beach, never.”
Shaant was praying that his friend didn’t fall over with a heart attack watching him closely. Aiden soon enough faded back into the mindset that was still back at the beach. Shaant smiled softly continuing to watch how much Aiden longed to be back to the sand and waves, he shook his head once still observing his Hufflepuff friend. That’s when it went full circle back to his summer, he chuckled at Aiden’s ouch. Worse then school? Yes, school at least there was friends. “ I believe you are right, at least here I have you guys, and the same women that grades my paper isn’t the one that cooks for us. Moods often affect my grades”
Shaant screwed his nose up trying to think of how in fact he did survive. His thoughts dwindled on Quidditch in the security of their high walled back yard and with his father’s careful eye. He then turned back to Aiden and shrugged once. “I guess those two hours a day I get to help my sister learn Quidditch. And of course the irregular owls from my friends. Other then that, I have no idea” Shaant shifted in his spot to hold onto the wall, and look back to Aiden. “So do tell, how long have you been surfing? All I know about the sport is you get a piece of wood, get on top of it and let the water take you. Correct? Correct me if I’m dead wrong about your passion?”

Aiden wasn't sure why Shaant was laughing as he asked if he'd ever been surfing. It was a simple question. His reply caught him off guard. "You've never been to the beach?" he asked, his eyes wide in astonishment. That couldn't be possible. He couldn't imagine a life without the ocean, without surfing. No, he didn't even want to think about it. Summer was supposed to be about fun, about living without any stress, nothing to worry about. It was supposed to mean days with no homework, no studying and no more detentions. Aiden would never be able to stand summers like the ones his Ravenclaw friend had to live through.
The Hufflepuff listened to Shaant speak of his summer, shaking his head lightly. Leaning back on his hands he smiled. "Man, you should come to California with me next summer. I'll teach you to surf." It shocked Aiden the things the Ravenclaw had to to everyday of his summer. If he was in his place, he'd never want to go home. Again, the questions turned to Aiden's surfing and the Hufflepuff was glad to answer his friend's questions. "I don't know, I've been surfing since I can remember," he shrugged. Thinking back, he could remember standing on his grandfather's long board, holding onto his legs so he didn't fall off. When he was old enough, he began to surf on his own. He couldn't help but laugh at the second part of Shaant's comment. "Some boards are made of wood, others, like mine, are made of foam. And it takes a lot more effort to catch a wave then you might think." Aiden smiled. It was nice to talk about surfing, but he didn't want to take up the entire conversation with the sport. He wasn't going to let his passion leave Shaant confused, after all, growing up with the sport, he didn't realize how much the Ravenclaw knew about it, or how much he didn't.
