Leon observed Darek's smirk as he slid his book behind him. What's he thinking? Leon thought. "Fair enough. I figured you weren't right from the start, but hey. I'd rather not get killed because I make an assumption." Leon was starting to wonder, now, if Darek was an Animagus. He'd have to check the Ministry's list of registered Animagi--if he could--and see if he couldn't figure out what was up with Darek's ability to change the size of his canines, which probably included other things too.
Leon didn't really enjoy cracks about having the mind of a Ravenclaw, even if it was true--he'd found at least some of the Ravenclaws to be rather fond of learning and obsessed with studying; the latter, at least, was obviously not true of Leon, who had never studied. In fact, he didn't even know how to study. "If you say so," said Leon. "I'd like to think I already do know a spell to enlarge teeth, though that particular incantation escapes me at the moment." Leon shrugged as well as he could from his sitting position, waiting for some form of witty remark or other response out of Darek.

Darek smiled. "I would never kill you." He teased. "Unless you gave me a reason to." He added, as if he were actually pondering the subject. Darek was in fact registered with the Ministry, though he wasn't sure whether that information was open to the public. He hoped it wasn't.
Darek arched his eyebrow at Leon. "Oh, because Leon knowns every incantation by heart." He snarled sarcastically. "It's funny how they always escape you when you need them." he added with a slight chuckle. How long would he be able to avoid the question that continues to draw ever closer? Would he be able to trust Leon with the secret no one else knows?

Leon wondered what counted as a reason for Darek to kill him. For example, would annoying Darek halfway to death warrant death threats, or would he have to to do something more extreme? That was a question for another day. Leon responded to Darek's teasing statement with a mischievous grin, saying "Yeah, I know." He shifted a bit, starting to grow relatively uncomfortable with his position against the wall, a book digging into his back.
When Darek made a somewhat snide comment about his supposed omniscience when it came to incantations, Leon replied casually with "I wouldn't go that far. It's just the occasional charm or whatnot with a healthy mix of jinxes 'n hexes." Leon trailed off somewhat as he spoke his somewhat witty remark. He thought that he might've figured out why Darek was here in the first place, and why he seemed to be capable of changing the size of his canines at will. I bet he's an animagus, thought Leon. But I'll let him say that in somewhat uncertain terms, then spring my little trap. Leon was fairly confident Darek was an animagus, now that he thought about it. Little clues which probably wouldn't add up to much in the minds of many a person had all slowly added up in Leon's conscious, and he came up with an irrefutable conclusion: Darek is an animagus. Trying not to reveal his discovery upon his face, Leon adopted a somewhat innocent expression as he looked up at Darek, waiting for him to say something else.

Darek simply shrugged, sitting with one of his feet flat on the floor, the other laying straight out. His arm rested on his raised knee and he leaned his head against the cold stone wall, watching Leon shift uncomfortably.
He chuckled at Leon's rather modest comment. "Right, that's why you're constantly looking through those books." He stated rather sarcastically, motioning with his hand toward the book behind Leon. He watched the older Slytherin closely as he seemed to be thinking deeply about something. He'd have to be more careful of the information he let slip if he didn't want Leon figuring things out. As an almost innocent expression came across Leon's face, Darek arched his eyebrow. Yes, he'd have to be careful of the things he said.

Leon tracked Darek without overtly moving his head as he sat down, leaning his head against the wall. He replied to Darek's sarcastic statement with a nod, saying "Yeah... I like to know spells that're kind of handy. Of course, not that I don't know a bunch, and that's probably why you see my face in a book so often." Leon ended with a grin, still wondering if Darek was actually going to come out and say he was an animagus.
Tired of the corners of the book's cover digging into his back, Leon slid it out from behind him, leaning the book against the wall a foot or so away from him. With a relieved sigh, Leon tried to adopt a more comfortable position, and was successful to some extent. He tried to puzzle out where this conversation would go next, and decided to wait and see if Darek had anything else to ask or say to him.

Darek rolled his eyes at Leon's comment. "And which spells would you classify as not 'handy'?" He grinned, Leon's nose was always in a book. He watched as the older Slytherin pulled the book from behind him. He was expecting Leon to open it and start flipping through it again, but he didn't. Instead he placed it beside him. "So what's new with you?" He asked after Leon had gotten himself into a more comfortable position.

"Fair enough. You're not an Animagus, are you?" Leon blurted without thinking, and then felt like a moron--that was a tiny bit out of the blue. Sure, he was probably right, but even so, he wasn't sure what Darek's result would be. Would Darek lash out and try to kill him? No, probably not, but he couldn't be sure. After all, people could be fairly irrational when their secrets were exposed, in Leon's opinion. "I'm sorry--that was a bit rash of me." he apologized, still feeling like a moron no matter what Darek's reaction was.
If he took it well, then that was fine, he wouldn't be hated by Darek, but he'd still feel like a blunt moron. He braced himself for the other Slytherin's reaction, whatever it would be, and hoping that Darek wouldn't explode at him. He wanted to remain one of Darek's friends, but if his bluntness would make them enemies, then so be it. Leon wasn't one to complain to a higher power or whatever if he'd made an enemy today.

Darek chuckled as Leon blurted the question he'd been expecting. He shook his head. "Come on Leon, what gives you that idea?" He asked. He did classify Leon as his friend, but they weren't that close. Most people knew he just barely scrapped by in classes, and as a result they thought he wasn't very bright. How, then, would he manage to become an Animagus. It was common knowledge that few wizards even attempted the complicated Transfiguration, because it was so difficult.
Darek simply shrugged off Leon's apology. He only hoped he could slip past the question without having to come out and lie to his friend's face. If there was no way around it, Darek would have to remain on Leon's good side if he had any hopes of keeping his rather large secret a secret.

Leon still felt like an idiot, no matter what Darek said. With a shrug, he replied to Darek's question, saying, "Well, you're acting kinda weird, what with the fangs and all." That was really his only clue--and he was beginning to wonder if Darek wasn't just Transfiguring his teeth--as to whether Darek was an Animagus or not. Either way, Leon was halfheartedly determined to find out--he didn't want to accidentally spill Darek's apparent secret and kill their friendship, but he didn't enjoy being left in the dark either.
Leon noticed that Darek was trying to slip past his question, and dropped the subject. He didn't enjoy making his friends half-squirm; his making someone squirm was reserved for his enemies and the occasional lower-classman, when he was frustrated. Of course, he more or less flat-out tortured someone when he was feeling frustrated. Attempting to change the subject, Leon asked, "So how're your classes going?" In retrospect, this probably wasn't one of the best subject-shunting questions he'd asked.

Darek wasn't too worried about Leon finding out about his power, it was the rest of the student population he'd have a problem with. It didn't matter how worried or uncomfortable he felt inside, unless the person was good at reading minds, they wouldn't be able to tell. It was something Darek had managed to perfect while growing up with a twin brother. What could he say? It came in handy when trying to get away with something. He relaxed even more as Leon seemed to dismiss his theory. "I already told you I was working on Transfiguration. I was going to use it for the Hallows Eve Ball." He said, which reminded him. He still needed to get a date. He felt a bit bad about leaving Leon in the dark, but again, they weren't that great of friends and he couldn't really risk it.
Darek snorted as Leon brought up classes. There was just something about the way the Slytherin had said it that seemed funny to him. "How the hell should I know? Half the time I'm not even there." He shrugged, chuckling slightly. Leon wasn't his best friend, but he thought that he knew that. Shaking his head teasingly his laughter subsided.

Leon shrugged. "Fair enough," he replied. Good thing Darek was around; Leon had totally forgotten about the ball and needed to find a date eventually. Leon still really wished he could read minds: he wouldn't have minded knowing what was going through Darek's head. The way the other Slytherin had responded to his questions, blurting, and whatnot about his being an Animagus had more or less dispelled Leon's doubts about the subject, but he still would have liked to know what Darek was thinking. He'd have to work on that eventually.
Leon listened to Darek's comment about being in class. "Yeah. I wouldn't mind not having classes, but my parents'd kill me if they ever somehow found out I was skipping." Leon wasn't lying; his parents were pretty strict, even if he was their flower child. When it came to skipping classes, at least.

Darek nodded as Leon dismissed his theory of his being an Animagus. He relaxed a bit, but still held his mind alert, aware that the topic could pop back in at any moment. He also didn't want to slip up and raise the older Slytherin's suspicions. He still felt bad about avoiding Leon's questions, but he hadn't necessarily lied to him. No, if he managed to get a date to the Hallows Eve Ball, he'd make himself look like a vampire. Using his new fang capabilities, of course.
Darek shrugged. It wasn't that he didn't have classes. No, he just chose not to show up to said classes. An awkward smile appeared on the Slytherin's features. "My parents don't give a rat's ass about me," he said, an unwelcome edge to his voice. He shook his head, "I'm sorry," he offered, his voice returning to the lighter, carefree tone it had carried before. He was just a bit bitter about the fact that his parents spent all their time with his brother than with him. He was cast to the shadows and left to fend for himself.

Leon shrugged in response to Darek's nod. "I shut myself in my room for most of the time I was at home, but they'd still kill me if I managed to fail a class from too much skipping or whatever." He'd mostly gotten over the fact, no matter how much he utterly despised school outside of Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms. But hey, they were parents. What was the Slytherin boy to do?
Leon nodded understandingly in response to Darek's apology. "That's okay, I was the one who brought it up," he said. He figured it was best to drop the subject before Darek got openly hostile towards Leon. "So. Got a date to the Hallow's Eve dance yet?" Leon asked with half a grin on his face, not outwardly showing any signs of being affected by the unwelcoming edge in Darek's voice a moment ago.

A small smile twitched at the corner of Darek's mouth. "Me too," he agreed, thinking back to the many days he had spent in the shadows of his room, his guitar in hand. Or in the recent breaks from school, with a complex Transfiguration book on the floor beside him as he taught himself to become an Animagus. There were now only a few people that knew he had done so. Not that anyone really cared. "I could fall off the face of the earth and my parents wouldn't even notice," he said, his voice dull as if he were hollow.
Darek said, nor gestured anything in response to Leon's apology that wasn't really an apology. If that makes sense... anyway. His pale features moved into a bit of a smile. "Nope, you?" he asked, as if the darkness that played across his features and voice had never existed.

Leon grinned. "I won't feel like I'm the only one who does so, then." Leon was somewhat surprised by Darek's admission that he shut himself in his room; the other Slytherin didn't seem much like the lock-oneself-inside type. He shrugged inwardly, and winced when Darek told Leon that his parents didn't much care about him. "That sucks," said Leon, not really knowing how else to put it.
Leon wondered if Darek hadn't zoned out when he halfway-apologized and halfway-accepted Darek's own apology, but returned Darek's smile with a grin of his own anyway. "Can't say I do." Of course, Leon didn't really care. He'd just as soon sit in History of Magic for three hours as ask a random girl to go with him to the Hallow's Eve ball.
